The Monikie Angling Club Championship was held on Friday, May 24.
Though there were plenty fish showing, catching them proved difficult.
Winner on the evening was Iain Anderson, with a total catch of 14 lb 9 oz.
Runner-up with 13 lb 10 oz was his brother, Neil.
Third was Ian Crighton with 12 lb 11 oz.
Great fishing, lads!
Club President, Ian McLean, said, “Congratulations to our new club champion, Iain Anderson, who just got the advantage of brother, Neil, who came in second.
“Well done to all who took part.
“Everybody enjoyed themselves on an evening with plenty fish moving but difficult to tempt.”
“A great night had by all,” said last year’s champion, Neil Anderson.
“Loads of fish moving on the surface. Still a tad tricky but great fun.
“Size 14 CDC patterns were the answer .
“Well done to ma wee bruv, Iain, for winning it!
“Great quality fish at Monikie.”

Your club needs YOU!

We all love fishing at Monikie.
It’s great. We just roll up, pay the bailiff, and off we go.
“Tight lines,” calls the bailiff, cheerfully.
But what if there was no bailiff there?
No fishing! Now we all know everybody loves a volunteer, but the club can’t run without them. And we need some more members to step up to the plate.
If YOU feel you could offer your help for a one-off session, or maybe a regular slot, please email the club’s Bailiff Convenor, Fraser, at:
bailiff@monikie-angling-club.org.uk
for more info.
Thanks! Your help would be much appreciated by all members.
And no, the swan hasn’t volunteered. He couldn’t get the motor in the bailiff’s boat!

Evening sessions now open

The first evening session of the season was on Saturday, April 20.
Bailiff, John Geddes, says, “There was a good hatch around 7.15.
“It lasted about an hour with fish moving everywhere.
“Great fishing. I kept four (see John’s photo above) and returned 15.
“Hot head damsel, and Blue Alexandria proved irresistible!”

Catch a tagged fish and win a voucher

Club President, Ian McLean, has thrown down the gauntlet and the challenge is on!
Six big tagged fish were put into the Island Pond on Saturday, April 20. (Kenny Giblin took this photo as club members began to transfer the fish).
They’re a mix of browns and rainbows weighing around 6-7 lbs, and the tags are bright yellow so should be easily seen.
If you catch a tagged fish you’re entitled to a voucher for a free day’s fishing.
Good luck!

North Pond opens April 5

Good news!
The North Pond will open for business on Friday, April 5.
There will be three boats at first – boats 1, 3 and 4.
Go get ‘em!

John hooks a beauty!

John McDougall of Dundee West End AC caught this magnificent rainbow, weighing 5 lb 2 oz on the Island Pond on Wednesday, March 27. The fish took a size 12 Kate McLaren. Photo by George Potts.

Solid start to new season

The first three days of the season were heralded by mixed weather conditions. (See Fishing Returns for the first week here)
We had everything from horrible cold, wet, snow on Opening Day, Saturday March 16, to brilliant sunshine on Monday the 18th.
There were a few good fish taken on Saturday, as a few brave souls braved the cold, determined to test the waters on Opening Day.
Twelve fish succumbed on Sunday, and on Monday seven rods landed 21 fish for 53 lb 15 oz, plus17 fish returned.
Kept fish included two at 4 lb 6 oz, two more over 4 lbs and another three over 3lbs.
Fish aren’t deep, and most were taken on intermediate or midge tip lines.
Successful flies include damsel, black & green lure, nomads and cormorants.

Trial period to alleviate parking problems

Great news just in from Club President Ian McLean.
After much discussion with Angus Council and Angusalive over the past few months, we’ve been informed the disabled car park beside the Bailiff’s hut at the Island Pond can be opened for use by all anglers
This will be on a trial basis until June 30 when the situation will be reviewed.
This permission has been granted after pressure from your committee and will be subject to a full risk assessment by park management staff, who will assess all traffic access in the park.
They will also undertake works to improve safety measures and we will provide our plans for managing parking and access.
Given the short notice I can’t give full details of how this will all come together but here are some of the issues they – and – will be monitoring.
1) Speed when driving within the park. Keep it a slow as possible.
2) Co-operate fully with the bailiffs and rangers.
3) Number of cars. There is room for 12 cars. So 1 per boat and if the spaces are full you can drop your gear off.
I stress this is a trial and we will have to co-operate fully with the park management.
Access has been an issue ever since I joined Monikie Angling Club (35 years ago) and is raised constantly at AGM's and our meetings with the park management.
North Pond access is a totally different issue and is the subject of ongoing discussions. However we are hopeful if we can prove anglers can use the facility safely and sensibly then we can get some kind of arrangement for the North Pond.

Aaron steps in to tie flies for club raffle

Club member, Aaron Phillip, has offered to tie flies for the club raffle.
Willie Thomson’s flies proved extremely popular over the last few seasons, and his retiral was a big blow to the club.
So we are very grateful that Aaron has stepped into the breach.
You can enter the draw here, and also enter the raffle for an Airflo rod, reel or fly line, sponsored by Angus Angling, if you haven’t already done so.
Entry to each raffle costs £7 for seven monthly draws over the season. You can enter the raffles as many times as you wish.

Hook An Angler Gift Scheme Launched

The Club’s Hook An Angler Gift Scheme is now up and running.
As well as giving visitors to this website – and existing members – the chance to buy an angling session for a friend or family member.
This could be as a surprise birthday present, or as a way to introduce someone to the fantastic fishing we have available at Monikie.
All going well, it may encourage someone to join our fantastic fishing club.

Good turnout at AGM

Around 40 members attended the club’s AGM, held in the Masonic Lodge, Artillery Lane, Dundee, on Monday December 3, 2018.
New membership and boat hire prices were recommended, and approved by the members. These are now available on this website.
It was agreed the club would give up the lease for Crombie as it was no longer financially viable. The committee was given permission to renegotiate the lease for only the Island Pond and the North Pond.
Please remember all membership renewals are to be with the Membership Secretary by February 28, 2019.
